Nokia To Cut 7,000 Jobs

Nokia said it would outsource its Symbian software activities to Accenture, who will provide mobility software services to Nokia for future smartphones.

Nokia has seen its market share in smartphones falling sharply over the past few years as it continues to lose out to Apple and other manufacturers of the upmarket handsets.

To turn around its smartphone fortunes, in February Nokia unveiled a deal to start using Microsoft software instead of its own Symbian platform.

The deal enables Nokia to cut business research and development costs by 1 billion euros, or 18 percent, by 2013 from 5.65 billion in 2010.

Mahindra Renames Logan As Verito

Mahindra Renames Logan As Verito

Just over a year after breaking up its joint venture with Renault, Mahindra & Mahindra said it has renamed the Logan sedan as Verito, thus completely dropping the French automaker's badge from the entry level sedan.

"We are delighted to announce that the Logan will now be called the Verito. It will sport the Mahindra badge and emblem," the company said in a statement. It, however, did not specify whether there has been a change in the price of the sedan.

Currently the Logan, which is available in both petrol and diesel variants, is priced between Rs 4.67 lakh and Rs 6.47 lakh (ex-showroom) as per the company's website.

Last April, M&M and Renault had agreed to part ways from their joint venture – Mahindra Renault Pvt Ltd – that was formed in 2005 to produce and sell the Logan in India as the car failed to meet expectations. M&M had agreed to buy out Renault's 49 per cent stake in the JV for an undisclosed sum.

The French auto major, however, agreed to continue to support M&M and Logan through a licence agreement and supply key components, including the engine and transmission.

As per their understanding, M&M could use the Logan brand for 18 months after which it was to drop all the Renault badge from the product as well as dealerships. M&M's statement did not elaborate on whether the Renault brand has also been dropped from the Logan showrooms.

Japan Quake Hits Honda’s India Car Production

Auto major Honda Motor Co Ltd on Monday said it will cut production in India by 50 per cent from May due to components supply constraints, after the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan last month.

The company, which is present in India through a joint venture with the Siel Group – Honda Siel Cars India Ltd, produces cars at its Greater Noida plant that has an installed capacity of one lakh units annually. Last year it had sold about 60,000 units in India.

"We are experiencing gaps in our supply chain due to the situation in Japan, resulting in production cuts. We are moving to single shift operations from May, 2011, while carefully monitoring the situation," Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) Senior Vice-President (Marketing & Sales) Jnaneswar Sen said in a statement.

The announcement comes following a production cut by Honda Motor at its plants in Japan following a shortage of components due to the impact of the Tsunami on its parts suppliers.

"The situation with parts supply in Japan remains fluid, production of component parts and vehicles at Honda plants is at approximately 50 per cent of the original production plan," the statement said.

Honda will carefully monitor the situation and manage its operations accordingly, it added.

Most of Japan-based Honda suppliers are making progress to restart production, and many either have or are ready to resume parts production. However, there are a few suppliers that have yet to resolve the challenge to resume their production, it said.

The company said Honda was working with its suppliers to help reestablish their operations, while evaluating other possible sources for those parts in the supply chain.

"We plan to get back to normal production as soon as supplies normalise," Sen said.

Google Doodles John James Audubon’s Birthday

The doodle in place of the usual Google logo on Tuesday is inspired by the paintings of the famous French-American ornithologist John James Audubon. The doodle celebrating Audubon's birthday has, like many other Google doodles, a pattern of the Google logo visible. In the latest doodle, the Google logo is made up of the branches of the trees the birds in the painting are perched.

Audubon was born in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), then a French colony, on April 26, 1785 to a French sea captain and plantation owner and his French mistress. He spent his early years in France and immigrated to the United States at the age of 18. He had an avid interest in birds and drawing right from his childhood.

He began his study of American birds soon after his arrival in the US while also dabbling in the series of unsuccessful business ventures. He was also briefly jailed for bankruptcy. Meanwhile his interest for drawing birds steadily grew and published the first volume of his illustrations title The Birds of America in 1827. The book was well received and Audubon had established himself as an ornithologist of note. His other works include Ornithological Biography, A Synopsis of the Birds of North America and Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America.

James Audubon died at the age of 65 on January 27, 1851 in New York.

Google doodles have gained immense popularity over the past few years and the Google team has put out commemorative doodles on events ranging from news events, civic milestones, birthdays, death anniversaries and important dates in history.

Sai Baba from young

Sai Baba from young

Sai Baba born as Sathyanarayana Raju on 23 November 1926 is a spiritual guru and educator.
His birth, which his mother Eswaramma asserted was by miraculous conception, was also said to be heralded by miracles. As a child, he was described as unusually intelligent and charitable. He was exceptionally talented in drama, music, dance and writing, and was an avid composer of poems and plays.

He was said to be capable of materialising objects such as food and sweets out of thin air. On 8 March 1940, while living with his elder brother Seshama Raju in Uravakonda, Sathya was apparently stung by a scorpion. He lost consciousness for several hours. Within the next few days there was a noticeable change in Sathya's behavior. He began to sing Sanskrit verses, a language of which he had no prior knowledge. His parents brought Sathya home to Puttaparthi. On 23 May 1940, Sathya called household members and materialised sugar candy and other items. His father became furious upon seeing this, thinking his son was bewitched. He took a stick and asked him who he was.

To this Sathya announced calmly and firmly he was Sai Baba, a reference to Sai Baba of Shirdi. He proclaimed himself to be a reincarnation of Sai Baba of Shirdi a saint who became famous in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Maharashtra, and who had died eight years before Sathya was born. Later that year, Sathya Sai Baba declared that he had no worldly relationship with anyone, and around this time, devotees began to gather to him. In 1940, Sathya Sai Baba began to travel to Madras and elsewhere in South India and soon had a large regional following.

In 1944, a mandir (temple) for Sathya Sai Baba's devotees was built near the village. The construction of Prashanthi Nilayam, the current ashram, began in 1948 and after 2 years, was completed in 1950. In 1957 Sathya Sai Baba went on a North Indian temple tour. In 1954, Sathya Sai Baba established a small free General Hospital in the village of Puttaparthi.
Sri Sathya Sai University, Puttaparthi. In 1963, Sathya Sai Baba suffered a stroke and four severe heart attacks.

On 29 June 1968, Sathya Sai Baba made his first and only trip overseas, to Uganda. During a discourse in Nairobi, Sathya Sai Baba stated, 'I have come to light the lamp of love in your hearts, to see that it shines day by day with added lustre. 'I have not come on behalf of any exclusive religion. I have not come on a mission of publicity for a sect or creed or cause, nor have I come to collect followers for a doctrine. I have no plan to attract disciples or devotees into my fold or any fold. I have come to tell you of this unitary faith, this spiritual principle, this path of Love, this virtue of Love, this duty of Love, this obligation of Love.'

Since 2005, Sathya Sai Baba has used a wheelchair and his failing health has forced him to make fewer public appearances. In 2006 he suffered a fractured hip when a student standing on an iron stool slipped, and both boy and stool fell on Sathya Sai Baba. He gives darshan now from a car or his porte chair. He is also known as a singer, having released several CDs of bhajans (devotional songs).
