Olympic Games 2012: UK to miss air quality target

The UK was scheduled to meet the targets on air quality by 2010, which
they failed so they have been given an extension till 2015. According
to the government records, they will not meet the required targets in
2015
ORIGINALLY, THE UK was supposed to meet the targets on air quality in
2010 which had been set by European Union, but an extension has been
given to UK till 2015. If the government records are to be believed
then the UK is going to miss the targets in all probability, which
would thus lead to a legal row just before the commencement of the
Olympic Games in London.

"The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has
admitted many cities will not meet them (air quality targets) before
2020, while meeting London's targets could be as late as 2025. If the
European Commission is not satisfied by these plans, it could launch
infringement action next year," reported the BBC. The Olympic
Committee would be closely monitoring the issue as they would not want
any kind of external disturbances during the games. During the last
Olympic Games in Beijing, pollution was one of the most criticised
issues.

One of the serious challenges that the DEFRA faces is reducing
emissions from various kinds of transport that is available in UK. So,
the British government are planning to ban those vehicles in cities,
which pollutes heavily in the atmosphere. They have introduced various
schemes that would help them in curtailing the emissions.

Britain's air quality is considered to have one of the worst records
among European nations. The UK must pull up its socks in time so that
there is a smooth and proper functioning of the Olympic Games in 2012.
A failure during the games of any kind would be treated as a dent in
the country's reputation to successfully manage large-scale sporting
events.

Google search engine goes vocal

Google search engine goes vocal

GOOGLE ANNOUNCED on 14th june its plan to soon launch a new technology that will allow its users to speak their search requests instead of typing them on screen. The service is similar to the one available on smart phones with Google's Android software. All one needs to do is click the microphone icon inside the Google search box and speak the search request. This in not all, the company has also announced a digital image search feature. Drag a digital image into the search box and press enter. The two features will be available for use within the next few days.

This is not the first time that the company had introduced a new technology; such services have also been unveiled in the past and aim at making search easier and quicker for its users. The vocal search engine will especially be useful in case of longer enquiries and words that are hard to spell.

Although, the technology seems quite perfect and user-friendly, it does have a few shortcomings. The first being that it is not fit to be used in offices. Making search request vocally could be quite disturbing to others sharing the same cubicle or those in the neighbouring cubicles. Since the engine responds to voice conversations going on between people nearby could also find their way into the search box. Same problems could arise at other public places such as coffee shops, and restaurants, etc. This would limit the use of the voice search engine to homes only.

There could be other limitations too, for instance, if a word is not pronounced properly that could create confusion for the search engine. Besides, initially, it will only be available for English language users and limited to Google's Chrome browser.

Wimbledon seeds announced, Nadal and Wozniacki top seeds

THE MUCH-awaited seeds for Wimbledon 2011 have been announced. Spaniard Rafael Nadal and Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark have been given top seed in Men's and Women's singles category respectively. The competition is all set to start on June 20 and end on July 3.

Djokovic, Federer, Murray, Soderling have been seeded second, third, fourth and fifth respectively in the men's category. Andy Roddick has been seeded eighth in the competition. Initially, Kim Clijsters had been seeded second in the women's category but after her withdrawal from the competition all players were pushed 1 seed above. Thus, Vera Zvonareva. Li Na, Victoria Azarenka, and Maria Sharapova have been seeded second, third, fourth, and fifth respectively. Serena Williams has been seeded seventh, and is making her comeback after a year-long layoff due to injury.

Though, Federer has been seeded third, it is for the first time that he has been ranked so low since 2003. He has won the Wimbledon title 6 times and has been seeded first most of the times and an occasional second in one outing, in 2009. The organisers have decided to hand over the top seed to Rafael Nodal, who lost to Frenchman, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, in the Queen's grass court tournament last week. It would not be a big surprise if the top 4 seeds make it to the final four. The local favourite Andy Murray, seeded fourth, would be well supported by his home crowd who are longing for a British player to lift aloft the Wimbledon title. But will he play like a champion and win the title that even Nadal says will one day belong to Murray?

When it comes to Women's tennis, the competition is wide open, with Caroline Wozniacki being given top seeding. There is an intense rivalry between the players in the women's circuit. The likes of Williams sisters, Francesca Schiavone, Marion Bartoli, Samantha Stosur and host of other players could give the top 5 seeds a run for their money. 2010 Wimbledon champion, Serena Williams, could make a fairytale comeback by winning the elusive title. Will we see a rejuvenated Serena push aside emerging competition?

Given the draw of the Wimbledon 2011, we are likely to witness some mouth watering clashes as witnessed in recent years. One of the most epic matches ever recorded took place last year when John Isner and Nicolas Mahut played an astonishing tennis match, which lasted for 11 hours 5 minutes, with John Isner being the victor. The score line read 6–4, 3–6, 6–7(7–9), 7–6(7–3), 70–68.
Given the sheer quality of top tennis talent that will be on display at Wimbledon, will we witness marathon matches and closely-fought battles? Will Wimbledon 2011 throw up new champions? Or will class and experience, once again, will be the difference between a winner and a challenger?

Google's home page featured a "live" doodle showing a live feed of the lunar eclipse from images from robotic telescope service Slooh.

"Starting now, see the latest state of the lunar eclipse on our homepage - thanks @slooh for the imagery," Google said on its Twitter account.

During the eclipse, visitors to Google.com can see a dial at the bottom of the image moving left to right, going through the various stages of the eclipse, before settling on the current feed.

Slooh claims to have members in 80 countries who have taken 1.3 million photos of 35,000 unique objects and events in the night sky since its launch on Dec. 25, 2003.

It is now in a initiative with Google Sky to Map the Universe and co-promote live astronomy.

"All SLOOH member photos will now be integrated into Google Earth/Sky for the world to see, and SLOOH's live missions will be featured as well. SLOOH also shares the view with schools throughout the world and your membership supports this educational outreach," it said.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration earlier said the event could be seen from the eastern half of Africa, the Middle East, central Asia and western Australia.

But it said observers throughout Europe will miss the early stages of the eclipse because they occur before moonrise.

On the other hand, Eastern Asia, eastern Australia, and New Zealand would miss the last stages of eclipse because they occur after moonset.

Even observers in eastern Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina will witness totality.

Facebook Looking At IPO In October: Report

Facebook is preparing to file for an initial public offering as early
as October or November that could value the popular social networking
site at more than $100 billion, financial news channel CNBC reported
on Monday.

Goldman Sachs is leading the chase to manage the lucrative offering,
which could come in the first quarter of 2012, CNBC said.

With more than 500 million users, Facebook is the world's most popular
Internet social network and one of the most hotly-anticipated initial
public offerings on Wall Street

Facebook, whose chief operating officer last month told Reuters that
an IPO was "inevitable," declined to comment on the latest report
about its timing for an offering.

Anticipation about a Facebook's future plans comes at a time of
heightened investor appetite for shares of fast-growing social
networking companies.

Professional networking site LinkedIn Corp launched its own IPO last
month, valuing the company at about $7 billion.

Earlier this month, daily deals site Groupon Inc filed to raise up to
$750 million in an IPO, fueling speculation that Internet valuations
have become too rich.

Founded in a Harvard dorm room in 2004 by the now 27-year-old Mark
Zuckerberg, Facebook threatens Internet companies like Google Inc and
Yahoo Inc as it becomes a popular online destination for Web surfers
and an important marketing channel for advertisers.

Facebook was valued at $50 billion earlier this year when Goldman
Sachs invested in the company.

Recent transactions of Facebook shares on the secondary market have
valued the company between $78 billion and $81 billion, according to
information on the website of Sharespost, an exchange for trading
shares in private companies.

Facebook is expected to generate roughly $4 billion in advertising
revenue in 2011, up from $1.86 billion a year earlier, according to
market research firm eMarketer.

MF Husain, India's best known contemporary painter, has died in LondonIndia should grieve for two reasons. At 95, he was active and had lots of painting left in him. And he died in exile, unhappy with the way his home country had treated him.

Husain had been in exile since 2006, when he was attacked by rightist groups angry with his portrayal of Hindu deities. Last year, he was offered Qatari citizenship. But his heart remained in India, and in interviews, spoke fondly of what this country meant to him.

Google doodles a digital guitar on Les Paul's birthday on 9th June 2001

Google has put up a digital version of the legendary electric guitar, the Gibson Les Paul, in place of its logo to celebrate the 96th birthday of the country and jazz guitarist, songwriter and inventor, Lester William Polsfuss, better known as Les Paul.

The Google doodle in honour of Les Paul is playable by hovering the cursor over the doodle. Les Paul was known for his innovative and experimental guitar playing style.

Born on June 9, 1915 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Les Paul developed an interest in music at the age of eight when he started to play the harmonica, followed by banjo and finally moved to the love of his life - the guitar.

Google doodles a digital guitar on Les Paul's birthday

He had formed his own Les Paul Trio in the 1930s and performed long with Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters in the 1940s. He also had his own radio program.

He designed a solid body electric guitar in 1941, but it finally went on sale by the Gibson Guitar Company in 1952. He also pioneered the development of multi-track recording and invented the eight-track tape recorder and the technique of overdubbing.

In 1988 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2005 in the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

He continued to play and perform live well into his 90s. In 2006, aged 90, he won two Grammys. Les Paul died on August 12, 2009. He was 94.

Google has now become more frequent with animated and interactive doodles. Of the last 10 Google doodles, five included animations or were interactive.

The Google doodle had first gone interactive in May 2010 to celebrate the 30th birthday of the popular Pac-Man game.

For a dozen years, Google has been occasionally swapping its everyday logo for a doodle. The Google doodles, an artistic take on the Google logo, have gained immense popularity over the past few years and the Google doodle team has put out commemorative doodles on numerous events of international or national importance, ranging from news events, civic milestones, birthdays, death anniversaries and important dates in history. Google estimates it has created more than 900 doodles since 1998, with 270 of them running in 2010. Some appear globally, and others are tailored for local markets.

OS X Lion- The world's most advanced desktop operating system

Apple unveils iCloud, OS X Lion, iMessenger

Apple CEO Steve Jobs briefly emerged from a medical leave Monday to
unveil a free service that lets customers share calendar entries,
songs and other files among their devices more easily.
The company also announced new software to make Mac computers behave
more like mobile devices and Apple's mobile devices more like rival
smartphones.
Jobs received a standing ovation as he appeared at Apple Inc.'s annual
developers' conference, his second major public appearance since he
went on medical leave in January for unspecified reasons and duration.

Jobs left many of the specific announcements to top executives. In the
first hour, he appeared on stage for only a few minutes. Typically,
he's on stage longer at major public launches.
Apple's stock was down $4.38, or 1.3 percent, at $339 in afternoon
trading. The stock was up in the morning, but fell soon after Jobs
left the stage.
James Brown's "I Feel Good" played over the loudspeakers just before
Jobs walked on stage, looking thin, in his signature outfit of mock
turtleneck and blue jeans.
One audience member shouted out, "we love you."
Jobs returned to stage about 80 minutes into the presentation to
announce a service called iCloud.
An iCloud account will store user information from several devices,
including iPhones and iPads, and make sure the same contacts, calendar
events and files are available on all of them. It also backs up the
data on Apple's servers. It mimics Google's Docs system for online
files, and products from smaller online-storage companies like
Dropbox.
iCloud will also allow customers to store their music online. Buy a
song on iTunes once, and it will be available on up to 10 devices.
The basic service will be free for now and replaces a $99-a-year Apple
service called MobileMe, which Jobs said "was not our finest hour."
For $25 a year, iTunes will be able to scan a computer's hard drive
for music files that have been converted from CDs. If the same songs
are available in the iTunes store, they'll be added to the iCloud
locker. That means there's no need to purchase the songs again or
upload them. The service, known as iTunes Match, will upload any songs
to iCloud if it's not already available through iTunes.
The company has been in talks with the major recording companies to
make the service possible.
iCloud could give users a wide array of music for their iPhones, iPads
and Wi-Fi-capable iPods, without having to connect them to their home
PCs to transfer songs. Google Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. have launched
similar services.
The music portion of iCloud is available right away, with remaining
features coming in the fall.
Jobs seemed animated as he unveiled iCloud, walking back and forth on
stage and making many gestures during the presentation. He walked off
stage briefly to let an executive demonstrate an iCloud feature. After
about five minutes, he walked slowly back up the steps to the stage to
continue.
Earlier, Apple unveiled an operating system update for Mac computers
called Lion. With it, Apple is expanding the ways finger-touches can
be used to control the software. For instance, with the swipe of the
fingers over the Mac trackpad, the user can switch from one program to
another.
In another nod to bringing the computer closer to the iPhone and iPad,
Apple is adapting more of its programs to run in a special full-screen
mode, in addition to the traditional "window" mode.
Lion will be available to consumers next month for $30. A preview
version was made available Monday to software developers.
Apple also unveiled updates to its software for iPhones and iPads. It
will present notifications of new emails, missed calls and other
events in a more intelligent fashion, reminiscent of the way Google
Inc.'s Android smartphone software already does. The software will
present all pending notifications in a list, accessible with the swipe
of a finger.
The new mobile software, iOS 5, will have a newsstand for newspapers
and magazines that you subscribe to on iPad. New issues are
automatically downloaded and placed there.
Apple also announced greater integration with Twitter, so that you can
tweet photos, for instance, directly from a photo app.
iMessage in iOS 5 brings the functionality of iPhone messaging to all
of iOS devices - iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. iMessage allows users to
send encrypted text messages, photos, videos or contact information to
other iOS 5 devices over Wi-Fi or 3G.
The software would be available to consumers in the fall. iPhones,
iPads and iPod Touches will now able to get operating system updates
directly from the Internet, without having to connect to a PC running
iTunes. It's something Android phones can now do.
Apple didn't announce a new iPhone model. In recent years, it has
revealed one in at the developer's conference in early June, then
launched it a few weeks later. This year, a new iPhone model isn't
expected to reach stores until the fall.
Jobs made a public appearance in March to announce a new iPad. On
Monday, Apple said it has sold more than 25 million iPads since they
went on sale 14 months ago.

Germany Win To Close In On Euro 2012 Finals

Germany swept to the brink of a place in the 2012 European Championship with a seventh straight qualifying win Tuesday, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic's hat-trick in a 5-0 rout of Finland kept Sweden in the hunt for top spot in its group.

Real Madrid playmaker Mesut Oezil scored one goal and set up another as Germany beat Azerbaijan 3-1 in Baku, leaving Joachim Loew's side needing two points from its last three Group A games to guarantee a spot in next year's tournament in Poland and Ukraine.

Ibrahimovic inspired Sweden to a fifth win in six Group E matches, with the AC Milan striker coming off the bench to score three times in 22 minutes to help lift his country three points behind the Netherlands.

World and European champion Spain followed up a 4-0 thrashing of the United States on Saturday with a 3-0 win against Venezuela but fellow European heavyweight Italy was upset 2-0 by Ireland in Liege, Belgium, in another friendly.

In other Euro 2012 qualifiers, Hungary stayed three points behind Sweden, thanks to a 3-0 win in San Marino, Belarus beat Luxembourg 2-0 to close to within a point of Group D leader France and there were also wins for Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Faeroe Islands.

Germany, one of three countries with perfect records in qualifying along with Spain and the Netherlands, moved 10 points clear of second-place Belgium. Only Turkey — a point further back but with a game in hand – can stop Loew's men finishing top.

"It was important to win and to end the season with the seventh win. It was a perfect season," Germany captain Philipp Lahm said.

Oezil crashed an angled shot into the net off the post in the 30th minute to open the scoring before setting up striker Mario Gomez for the second goal 11 minutes later.

Murad Huseynov scored for Azerbaijan, which is managed by former Germany coach Berti Vogts, in the 89th, but Andre Schuerrle sealed victory for the visitors in injury time.

Ibrahimovic was a substitute after only recently recovering from an ankle injury but came on in the 25th as a replacement for the injured Ola Toivonen, with Sweden already 1-0 up through Kim Kallstrom's goal in the 12th.

After taking the captain's armband, Ibrahimovic slotted a low finish into the bottom corner in the 31st following a slide-rule pass from Kallstrom. He then stroked the ball into an empty net four minutes later after Sebastian Larsson's cutback.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker clinched his hat-trick with a free header at the back post from Kallstrom's inswinging 53rd-minute free kick before setting up Emir Bajrami for Sweden's fifth in the 82nd.

Fresh from scoring for Barcelona in a 3-1 victory over Manchester United in the Champions League final 10 days ago, strikers David Villa and Pedro Rodriguez set an understrength Spain on its way to a convincing win in Venezuela with first-half goals.

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso added the third on the stroke of halftime as Spain coach Vicente del Bosque set a record for wins at the helm of the national team, his 39th surpassing the total achieved by predecessor Luis Aragones.

Keith Andrews and Simon Cox scored either side of halftime for Ireland, whose coach Giovanni Trapattoni got one over Italy counterpart Cesare Prandelli, who he used to manage when in charge of Juventus in the early 1980s.

In other friendlies, Norway defeated Lithuania 1-0 and Austria won 3-1 against Latvia, which ended the match with eight men after three late sending-offs.

The other four Euro 2012 qualifiers on Tuesday featured teams with only outside chances of gaining automatic qualification as group winners, although second-half goals from Sergei Kornilenko and Anton Putilo eased Belarus to a win over Luxembourg that kept the pressure on France, which has a game in hand over its closest rival.

Bosnia-Herzegovina, a 2-0 winner at home to Albania – thanks to goals by Haris Medunjanin and Darko Maletic, is two points further back in Group D and has played six games like France.

Zoltan Liptak, Imre Szabics and Vladimir Koman were the scorers for Hungary against San Marino, which remains without a point or a goal in qualifying.

Faeroe Islands earned a maiden victory in Group C and a first three-point haul since 2009, beating Estonia 2-0 through goals from Frodi Benjaminsen and Arnbjorn Hansen.
