AN OS FOR TOUCHSCREENS-WIN 8

We talked about Windows 8 on a laptop (and desktop) a few days ago. It is a good OS but with dual personality and on a laptop, without a touchscreen, this affects the user experience in a rather negative way. Even Microsoft tacitly acknowledges that Windows 8 works best when it is paired with a touchscreen. To test this claim, we spent some days with a Windows 8 tablet.

Made by Samsung, the tablet that we used was powered by a Core i5 Sandy Bridge processor and 4GB RAM. It was rather thick and was prone to overheating because of the powerful hardware inside it. But fortunately, this tablet was just a concept device. It will not go on sale in the market.

The Windows tablets that will be available in the market will be likely less powerful than the one we used. Though this shouldn't be an issue because prototype tablet was overkill. The actual tablets are also going to be much more sleeker, with better design and improved finish.

Windows 8 and a tablet go together a lot better than Windows 8 and a desktop. There are two main reasons for it.

One, the gestures that feel jarring with keyboard and mouse seem natural and obvious with a tablet. Just swipe down from the top bezel to close an app. Flick and cycle through open apps by swiping right from the left bezel. Swiping up from the bottom bezel brings up the options while the right bezel is used to bring up charms. It all happens in fluid and fast manner. There is no lag.

Second reason why Windows 8 works well with the touchscreen is due to the design language it uses. Modern UI uses big and beautiful tiles. These are easy to click with fingers. Also, apps with Modern UI have lots of white space. This again makes a lot of sense on touchscreen as various options can be clicked with finger taps with ease. There is no risk of hitting two options.

Of course, some issues persist. Because Windows 8 works best as a tablet OS when it is being used in Metro UI mode, we hated going to the 'desktop mode', which is similar to the environment in Windows 7. Unfortunately, the Windows app store, which is the only place to download apps with Modern UI, is still not well stocked. This means there are times when Windows 8 tablets users will have to leave the Modern World and enter the OS of yore. Though app situation is improving at an astounding rate.

Most Windows tablets will come with keyboard docks or other similar accessories that would allow users to convert them into a 'laptop'. For example, Surface, the tablet made by Microsoft, comes with keyboard accessories. Using Windows 8 device with a keyboard or mouse is not as satisfying as using it on a tablet. But the flexibility is a welcome addition. Pairing the tablet with a keyboard helps in certain cases. For example, while watching a film on the tablet you get an email and you have to type a rather long reply. Well, you can connect the keyboard to the tablet and use it to type and send the mail. After that you can detach the keyboard and go back to the video.

Overall, the tablet experience with Windows 8 is better than what iPad or Android tablets offer. The various gestures are ingenious way of navigating around the OS. More importantly, deep within it is a full-fat operating system. This means, many tablets powered by Windows 8 will accept pen drives, handle demanding tasks like video editing and run complex PC games like Call of Duty or Need For Speed.

Who is Saina Nehwal? : know about her ..

Saina Nehwal's stature as a top badminton player rose further when she
won the Denmark Open Badminton tournament on October 21 2012, her
sixth premier title overall and second premier title of the year after
the Indonesian Open. She beat a hapless Juliane Schenk of Germany
21-17, 21-8 in 35 minutes to lift the coveted trophy.

Saina has been on a steady rise which was recently celebrated with an
Olympic Bronze medal. She could have grabbed an even better colour but
was defeated by China's Yihan Wang during the course of the London
Olympics. She returned against the world number 1 in the Denmark Open
badminton semi-final and avenged her defeat. This is the spirit which
defines this 22-year-old and her style of play!

Records and laurels have steadily come Saina's way since long. On June
17, she won the Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold title in Jakarta. This
was her third Indonesia Open title.

Earlier in June, she also became the first Indian to win the Thailand
Open badminton title. She won the Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold in March
2012.

Saina, however, was introduced to the sport by her parents, both of
whom were former champions in Haryana. The right-handed shuttler was
born in Dhindar (which is in Haryana's Hisar district) but her
father's work took Saina to Hyderabad where she spent her formative
years.

She was spotted by PSS Nani Prasad Rao, badminton coach of the Sports
Authority of Andhra Pradesh, at the age of 8 and he convinced her
father to allow her to pursue a career in badminton. And Mr Harvir
Singh backed his daughter's dreams.

Saina first caught India's attention in 2006, when she became the
first Indian to win the Philippines Open despite going into the
tournament as the 84th seed. Many top-seeded players lay vanquished in
her wake as she announced her arrival on the international scene.

In 2008, she became the first Indian woman to make it to the
quarterfinal of the Olympics in the singles event. That was the 29th
edition of the Games in Beijing.

She also made it to the World Super Series semi-final in December 2008.

She made history in 2009 when she won the Indonesian Open, becoming
the first Indian to win a Super Series tournament. She repeated that
feat in 2010. She also won a gold medal in the woman's singles event
at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010, which helped India finish
No. 2 in the medals tally.

She is being currently coached by Indonesian champion Atik Jauhari
while All England Champion Pullela Gopichand is her mentor. She was
previously coached by Dronacharya Award winner S M Arif.

Tech News :Have scientists discovered a diamond bigger than Earth?

Forget the diamond as big as the Ritz. This one's bigger than planet Earth.

Orbiting a star that is visible to the naked eye, astronomers have
discovered a planet twice the size of our own made largely out of
diamond.

The rocky planet, called '55 Cancri e', orbits a sun-like star in the
constellation of Cancer and is moving so fast that a year there lasts
a mere 18 hours.

Discovered by a US-Franco research team, its radius is twice that of
Earth's and its mass is eight times greater. It is also incredibly
hot, with temperatures on its surface reaching 3,900 degrees
Fahrenheit (2,148 Celsius).

"The surface of this planet is likely covered in graphite and diamond
rather than water and granite," said Nikku Madhusudhan, the Yale
researcher whose findings are due to be published in the journal
Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The study - with Olivier Mousis at the Institut de Recherche en
Astrophysique et Planetologie in Toulose, France - estimates that at
least a third of the planet's mass, the equivalent of about three
Earth masses, could be diamond.

Diamond planets have been spotted before but this is the first time
one has been seen orbiting a sun-like star and studied in such detail.

"This is our first glimpse of a rocky world with a fundamentally
different chemistry from Earth," Madhusudhan said, adding that the
discovery of the carbon-rich planet meant distant rocky planets could
no longer be assumed to have chemical constituents, interiors,
atmospheres, or biologies similar to Earth.

David Spergel, an astronomer at Princeton University, said it was
relatively simple to work out the basic structure and history of a
star once you know its mass and age.

"Planets are much more complex. This 'diamond-rich super-Earth' is
likely just one example of the rich sets of discoveries that await us
as we begin to explore planets around nearby stars."

"Nearby" is a relative concept in astronomy. Any fortune-hunter not
dissuaded by "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz", F Scott Fitzgerald's
jazz age morality tale of thwarted greed, will find Cancri e about 40
light years, or 230 trillion miles, from Park Avenue.

Microsoft Releases TV Advertisement For Windows 8

Microsoft had started accepting pre-orders for the much anticipated
operating system last week. According to the report, Microsoft has set
the price of Windows 8 at $70 (roughly Rs 3,712) for a DVD pack. The
operating system is also available digitally for $40 (around Rs
2,121), where users can download Windows 8 on launch day, October 26.
Along with this, any customer who buys, or already bought, a Windows 7
PC between June 2 and the end of January 2013 will be able to get an
upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $15, a move designed to prevent a
drop-off in PC sales before the launch of Windows 8.
It was recently revealed that Microsoft had released an update to
Windows 8 even before the official launch. Microsoft states on its
official blog that this 'post-RTM' update has been issued to do away
with the usual waiting times users experienced with earlier versions
of Windows as the company went about improving its core code to suit
the various OEMs' newly-developed or enhanced components, drivers and
accompanying software. It states this update ensures we won't have to
wait for a service pack to experience such enhancements. This update
to Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 will be integrated with the
operating system when it is released on October 26.

Additionally, Microsoft is working on updates for its in-built Windows
8 apps. The company will release updates for many of the apps included
with the release to manufacturing (RTM) build of Windows 8, delivered
to manufacturers and to MSDN and TechNet subscribers in August. The
company announced on its official blog that it has started rolling out
updates for the various apps Windows 8 comes with.
These app updates will also be available to manufacturers to include
by default with PCs shipped in the future. Those who have already
installed Windows 8 RTM can get the updates from the Store app. The
Store tile will notify you when updates are available, and you can
open it and click the updates link in the top right corner to see the
list, and install the ones you want.
The Bing app is the first app to get the update. Microsoft will be
rolling out updates for the rest of the in-built apps until October
26.

Intel’s Outlook Fails To Inspire Hopes For PC Recovery

Intel Corp's weak outlook for fourth-quarter revenue and margins
dispelled lingering hopes for a revival in PC demand towards the end
of the year, pushing its shares 2 per cent lower.
Intel, along with rival Advanced Micro Devices, had previously warned
of weak demand for PCs, hit by a troubled global economy and the
growing popularity of tablets like Apple Inc's iPad, once dismissed as
a niche device but now leading a fundamental shift in consumer
computing.
Intel's corporate-focused server and data center business has helped
offset weak PC sales in recent quarters, but in the third quarter,
revenue from that division also disappointed as enterprises bought
fewer servers.

"You have to remember, data center has been the rock we've all leaned
on," said Patrick Wang, an analyst at Evercore Partners. "It's a
reflection of enterprises and companies rationalizing their year-end
spend." With economic growth slowing in China and struggling in Europe
and the United States, global PC shipments are expected by analysts to
decline slightly this year, the first annual drop since 2001.
Intel said the data center business, which sells server chips and
other equipment to companies and governments, grew 6 per cent year
over year in the third quarter, although it was down 5 percent from
the prior quarter.
Profitability will also take a hit, as Intel idles excess capacity at
its plants in an effort to reduce inventories of its processors. It
foresees fourth-quarter gross margins of 57 per cent, or 58 per cent
on a non-GAAP basis, both plus or minus a couple of percentage points.
Analysts on average expected gross margins of about 62 percent for the
current quarter.
Chief Financial Officer Stacy Smith said about two-thirds of the
anticipated decline in margins will come from excess capacity charges.
Intel is also running its factories at less than 50 percent of their
capacity, redirecting unused space and equipment to be used on more
cutting-edge production lines still being built.
To inject new life into PCs, Intel has been promoting a new category
of thin, "Ultrabook" laptops with touch screens enabled by Microsoft's
upcoming Windows 8. But the Ultrabooks launched so far have been
criticized as too expensive, and manufacturers have shipped fewer than
expected.
"I absolutely expect growth in the PC segment, and I firmly believe
that the level of innovation we're seeing in Ultrabooks is going to be
one of the catalysts," Smith told Reuters in a telephone interview.
"I'm not going to put a number out there -but I expect it to grow."
Shares of Intel fell to $22.35 in after hours trade, after closing up
2.85 per cent at $22.35.
Microsoft as savior?
The world's leading chipmaker is used to being king of the personal
computer market, particularly through its historic "Wintel" alliance
with Microsoft Corp, which led to breathtakingly high profit margins
and an 80 percent market share.
But in the fast-growing and cut-throat mobile world, Intel is
struggling – its market share is less than 1 per cent of smartphones,
trailing Qualcomm Inc, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, ARM Holdings Plc
and others.
That leaves some investors, already concerned about a lackluster
global economy, asking if Intel's invincibility has come to an end,
and whether its profit and revenue growth potential may come back down
to earth.
The PC industry has been banking on Microsoft's launch of Windows 8
later in October to breathe new life into laptops and slow the trend
of consumers buying smartphones and tablets instead of PCs. But there
has been little sign of a significant bump in PC manufacturing or
shipments ahead of the launch, at least in the short-term, analysts
say.
Intel estimated fourth-quarter revenue of $13.6 billion, plus or minus
$500 million. Analysts expected $13.74 billion for the current
quarter.
In the third quarter, Intel's revenue was $13.5 billion, compared with
$14.2 billion a year earlier. Analysts had expected $13.23 billion in
revenue for the third quarter, according to Thomson Reuters.

Cameraman Gangatho Rambabu (CGTR) Telugu movie review, first day talk and collections

Cameraman Gangatho Rambabu (CGTR) Telugu movie review highlights

After the resounding success of Gabbar Singh, Powerstsar Pawan Kalyan
this time picked a script that addresses contemporary problems. Ever
since the project was announced Cameraman Gangatho Rambabu's (CGTR) is
one of the most awaited movies of this. What more, its maverick
director Puri Jagannath who is wielding the megaphone for the film. So
here is a lowdown on some of the review highlights of CGR.

Cameraman Gangatho Rambabu (CGTR) Telugu movie review highlights

As one would expect Pawan Kalyan (Rambabu) is the life of the film.
His plays one of the most thunderously crackling characters in his
career.

Besides his appealing acting, he charms audiences with the right kind
of attitude the role has demanded. Upping the glam quotient he looked
uber stylish in his hip jackets! For his fans, it's a bonanza. This
film will go down as one of his best, in terms of performance.

He represents the common man. An angry commoner, he is boggled down by
problems plaguing the society- injustice, corrupt politicians and
sensationalism. But only this time his hands are not tied. Pawan bites
into it like a starving man devours a feast and inhabits it fully,
strutting and swaggering.

Puri Jagananth's direction deserves good marks but having said that,
the film could have been better. Puri managed to add a touch of
romance and self-introspection in the action fare.

The screenplay also may not be the most ideal one but conveys
everything in a straight and simple manner. Although there are several
jumps in the screenplay, Puri's storytelling manner fascinates the
audience.

Since it is the story a common guy who reacts to the news, and later
gets into the media to expose the evil deeds of the society, Puri
could have incorporated something better in the script to elevate
Rambabu's (Pawan) character

Dialogues are one of the assets of the film - Pawan's dialogues on
media, contemporary politics, describing girls, etc. had the audiences
whistling and applauding. Light hearted scenes brought out the
humorous best of Pawan.

Shyam K Naidu's camerawork complements the director's vision well.
Certain scenes and stunts may be gimmicky but these are the scenes
which will drive the masses crazy.

What also works fabulously in the movies favour is Pawan's capacity to
juggle roles.

Tamannaah (Ganga) is camera-friendly and performs naturally. The
actress is getting better with every movie.

Gabrieala Bertante (Smitha) peforms decent but, the audience could
have connected better with her character, had it been a familiar face.

Prakash Raj and Kota Srinivasa Rao are at their usual best -
delivering a stellar performance

The climax scenes, which had a huge crowd supporting Pawan Kalyan,
brought the house down- the theatre had audiences put your hands
together and applaud constantly.

Editing by SR Shekhar is mediocre. The film needs to go under the
scissors, particularly in the racy second half.

Mani Sharma's music is a huge let down to the film. Although couples
of numbers are peppy, you can hardly remember them.

To wrap the Cameraman Gangatho Rambabu (CGR) Telugu movie review
highlights package, the first half of the film goes on a decent note
while the film's racy second half keeps you going.

Google's doodle on 161st anniversary of Moby-Dick

Herman Melville Google doodle marks 161st anniversary of Moby-Dick

doodle_54.jpg

Herman Melville, celebrated author and the man behind the all-time classic Moby-Dick, is the inspiration behind Thursday's Google doodle.

Moby-Dick is the great epic of whales and waling. It tells the story of Ahab, Captain of the Pequod, and of his revenge-mission and insane pursuit of Moby Dick, the fierce white whale. Among Ahab's crew is Ishmael, a young man undergoing a gruelling rite of passage and pursuing a different salvation. As the Pequod circles the globe like a latter-day Noah's Ark, so Moby Dick ranges and digresses through space and time, through mythologies, religions and philosophies.

The Google doodle depicts a scene from the book where Captain Ahab leads a boat to strike at the huge white whale.

Herman Melville had written Typee and Omoo before he wrote, what he believed was his masterpiece, Moby-Dick. He was shocked by the less-than-flattering reception the book received. One critic described it as "[A]n ill-compounded mixture of romance and matter-of-fact. The idea of a connected and collected story has obviously visited and abandoned its writer again and again in the course of composition. The style of his tale is in places disfigured by mad (rather than bad) English; and its catastrophe is hastily, weakly, and obscurely managed."

It wasn't until way after Herman Melville's death and the end of World War I that Herman Melville was rediscovered and Moby-Dick found favour with the critics of the time. The book is now, of course, regarded as one of the all-time classics and considered essential reading for students in many countries across the world.

Google's doodle on 107th anniversary of Winsor McCay's comic strip's first publication

Google has recreated the adventures of Little Nemo in Slumberland for the 107th anniversary of Winsor McCay's comic strip's first publication.

Regarded as a comic-strip art masterpiece, the weekly strip first appeared on October 15, 1905 in the New York Herald as Little Nemo in Slumberland and later in New York American as In the Land of Wonderful Dreams.

The interactive and animated Google doodle celebrating the nightly dreams of the little boy called Nemo begins with Nemo dreaming about falling from his bed into a hole and being rescued by Princess Camille. After a series of little adventures, through Google-land (the interactive doodle strip is titled Little Nemo in Google Land) Nemo, as in the actual comic strip, falls out of his bed.

Winsor McCay's Little Nemo in Slumberland comic strip first appeared on October 15, 1905 in the New York Herald.

In the different panels of the Winsor McCay Little Nemo Google doodle the letters of the Google logo - G-O-O-G-L-E - appear in a chronological order.

Winsor McCay was not only a newspaper cartoonist, but also a pioneer of animated films. He started off as a poster and hoardings artist and later moved to newspaper cartooning.

critical vulnerabilities -firefox 16

Mozilla Firefox 16 was released on Tuesday and addresses numerous security vulnerabilities, many of which are rated as critical.
The new version of Firefox was accompanied by 14 security advisories. Eleven of those are rated as critical and some of them cover more than one vulnerability.
[ InfoWorld's expert contributors show you how to secure your Web browsers in a free PDF guide. Download it today! | Learn how to protect your systems with Roger Grimes' Security Adviser blog and Security Central newsletter, both from InfoWorld. ]
Many of the critical security holes that were addressed in Firefox 16 could have allowed attackers to execute arbitrary code on the system, bypass security checks that prevent Web pages from interacting with the browser in unauthorized ways, perform spoofing or clickjacking attacks, and, in the case of the Android version of Firefox, allow a malicious Web page opened in reader mode to gain the browser's permissions on the OS.
The other three security advisories were rated as medium severity and covered vulnerabilities that could have allowed attackers to execute cross-site scripting (XSS) or script injection attacks.
Most of the vulnerabilities fixed in Firefox 16, were also addressed in Mozilla Thunderbird 16 and Mozilla SeaMonkey 2.13 which were also released on Tuesday. Some of the fixes have also been backported to the Firefox and Thunderbird ESR (Extended Support Release) versions that are used in enterprise environments.
In addition to security patches, the new Firefox 16 also includes numerous bug fixes, improves JavaScript responsiveness, adds initial support for Web apps and preliminary VoiceOver support and features a revamped developer toolbar.

Google's Doodle on the 127th birthday of Niels Bohr and all about Niels Bohr

To mark the 127th birthday of Niels Bohr, Google today posted a doodle on its homepage. But who was was Niels Bohr?

Niels Bohr was a Danish physicist, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 1922 "for his services in the investigation of the structure of atoms and of the radiation emanating from them". Niels Henrik David Bohr was born in Copenhagen on October 7, 1885. His father, Christian Bohr was a Professor of Physiology at Copenhagen University.

Earlier in 1910, Niels Bohr had met Margrethe Norlund, sister of the mathematician Niels Erik Norlund. They tied the know in Copenhagen in 1912. In 1922, Bohr was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1927, Heisenberg developed his uncertainty principle, while working on the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics.

The Niels Bohr 127th birthday Google doodle showcases his contributions to science and shows the Bohr atomic model.
Who was Niels Bohr?

During World War II Bohr, fearing arrest by the Germans, escaped to Britain from where he went to the US to work on the Manhattan Project at the Los Alamos laboratory in New Mexico. The Manhattan Project lead to the development of the first atom bomb.

Following the war Bohr returned to Copenhagen. He continued to preach the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Niels Bohr died in Copenhagen on November 18, 1962. His son, Aage Bohr, was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1975.

The Niels Bohr 127th birthday Google doodle showcases his contributions to science and shows the Bohr atomic model. This model introduced by Bohr in 1913, was a radical departure from earlier descriptions of the atom and showed the atom as one with a small nucleus surrounded by electrons that travel in circular orbits in a structure similar to the solar system, with electrostatic forces providing attraction, not gravity.
