Oscar Awards :Pakistani Woman Wins Oscars

Pakistani Woman Wins Oscars

A history created. The country that prevents the freedom of women has learned its lesson on how a women can achieve. Just before few minutes, it was Sharmeen Obaid winning the honours for her astounding work in short film 'Saving Faces' that speaks about a plastic surgeon performing reconstruction surgery on victims affected by acid violence.

The film indirectly showcases how the women in Pakistan are subjected to tortures due to inequality in societal system.

India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew at 6.1 in December quarter

India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew at 6.1 per cent for the quarter ending 31 December 2011, signalling a sharp slowdown in economic activity.

The GDP growth is also slower than the 6.9 per cent in the September quarter, and has been declining for the past nine quarters. This is also the lowest in the past 13 quarters.

A Thomson Reuters poll of 26 economists released on Tuesday had put GDP growth at an annual 6.4 percent rate in the quarters, with forecasts ranging from 6.0 to 7.3 per cent with a majority of them lying below the consensus.

Manufacturing growth was hurt the most in the December quarter, clocking 0.4 per cent against 7. 8 per cent in the corresponding period last year. Agriculture also saw a sharp decline at 2.7 per cent, down from 11 per cent in the year-ago period.

Mining fell by almost half, from 6.1 per cent to 3.1 per cent, signally lower supply of raw materials for industry but also fuelled by lower demand as higher interest rates have put off companies from investing in expansion.

The trade and hotels industries fared better at 9.2 per cent, while construction slowed marginally from 8.7 per cent to 7.2 per cent.

Indian Economy :India's economic growth weakest in almost three years

India's economic growth weakest in almost three years

India's economic growth slowed to its weakest annual pace in almost three years in the three months to December, as high interest rates and rising input costs constrained investment and manufacturing.

GDP rose 6.1 per cent in October to December compared with a year earlier, a lower-than-expected increase, figures from the statistics office showed.

That marked a sharp pullback from 6.9 per cent growth in July to September and was the seventh successive quarterly slowdown, providing a gloomy backdrop for a Reserve Bank policy meeting and federal budget, both due in just over two weeks.

The median forecast of economists in a Reuters poll was for GDP to rise 6.4 per cent. The outcome of 6.1 per cent was the weakest in 11 quarters.

"Moderation in the manufacturing sector was likely the starkest as higher input prices and a sharp jump in borrowing costs depressed output," said Radhika Rao, an economist at Forecast in Singapore.

"The ball is in the government's court now to kick start policy reforms."

Tech News:Chinese relish crack in Great Firewall, log on to Facebook

Some Chinese Internet users have this week been able to access blocked websites such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, relishing the newfound freedom although the reason for the breach in China's Great Firewall of censorship was a mystery. China blocks most foreign social networking sites (SNS) out of fear that unfettered access would lead to instability. Chinese SNS firms have filled the void by offering similar products that censor topics the government may find sensitive.

"I can suddenly access YouTube! No need to breach the firewall!" Weibo user Arvin Xie posted on Tuesday. Weibo is a microblogging platform, similar to Twitter, that allows users to post short messages and follow other users. Internet users including students on university campuses reported that they were able to access YouTube, Facebook and Twitter on their mobile phones and desktops in the afternoon and evening on Monday and Tuesday.

"I used Facebook for the first time yesterday," Zhang Wenjin, 23, a student at Shanghai's prestigious Jiao Tong University told Reuters on Tuesday. "I went on and took a look. I'm sure there were suddenly a lot of people who signed up on Facebook yesterday," Zhang said, adding that she had also signed up for an account.

It is unclear what caused the crack in China's Great Firewall, as the blocking of websites and censoring of search results for politically sensitive terms is known, or how widespread it was.

On Wednesday, access to Facebook, YouTube and Twitter was again blocked. Some users in China pay for a virtual private network (VPN) to bypass the blocking of websites and censoring of searches. Over the weekend, Chinese users also gained access to Google Inc's social networking site, Google+ and flooded U.S. President Barack Obama's page on the site with calls for greater freedom in the world's most populous country.

Google+ is currently blocked through regular desktop access but its mobile application, which let users in China access the site, has become accessible recently. China, with more than 500 million Internet users, is the world's largest and most vibrant Internet community.

News About Windows 8: Microsoft unveils Windows 8 for consumer testing

Microsoft on Wednesday let consumers start trying out its upcoming touch-based Windows 8 operating system, which aims to power a new wave of computer tablets and traditional PCs designed to counter Apple's big gains in the market through its Macs and iPads.

The test "beta" version of the revamped system was introduced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the planet's largest cell phone trade show, and borrows some of the look of Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 software for Windows 8.

Windows 8 doesn't have the traditional "Start" menu, and applications are spread across a mosaic of tiles in a design Microsoft calls "Metro" - seen as an attempt by the company as a scramble to preserve its market share. And executives said it powers up on PCs in eight seconds, much faster than the previous version.

The tiles, which resemble road signs, can be navigated with a finger swipe on the screen or with a keyboard and mouse. But those testing out the new operating system won't be able to try out the finger swiping unless they already have systems enabled for touch use, and the system isn't expected to make its official debut until September or October.

Microsoft executives in Barcelona showed off how users can use their fingertips to swipe in and out of applications, and tilt upright computer screens to a flat position so they can be used as two-person gaming boards or big drawing tablets. A slim laptop had a hinge allowing it to be turned inside out so it could be used as a tablet instead.

"It's beautiful, it's modern, it's fast, it's fluid," said Steven Sinofsky, president of Microsoft's Windows division. "Windows 8 is a generational change in the windows operating system."

Hockey News: Sahara announces Rs. 1.12 crore reward for Indian hockey team

Monetary rewards continued to pour in for the Indian men's hockey team as Sahara India Pariwar on Tuesday announced a cash incentive of Rs. 1.12 crore for the players and the support staff of the side that emerged winners in the just-concluded London Olympic qualifiers.

India trounced France 8-1 in the final on Sunday to seal a place in the upcoming London Olympics after having missed the Beijing Games four years ago.

And it prompted Sahara, the official sponsor of the national game, to reward the players and team officials for their feat.

While mid-fielder Sardar Singh, who won the player of the tournament award, and ace drag flicker Sandeep Singh, who scored five goals including a hat-trick in the final, will be given a sum of Rs. 11 lakh each, the rest of the team members will receive an amount of Rs. 5 lakh each, Sahara said in a statement.

The support staff will also get an incentive of Rs. 1 lakh each, the release stated.

"We are very proud that India performed so well in this tournament. Hockey is our national game and we are proud of being associated with it," said Managing Worker and Chairman of Sahara India Pariwar, Subrata Roy.

"This reward is a small token of appreciation from us to encourage the sportsmen and the support staff to achieve greater success and bring laurels to our beloved nation through our national sport," he added.

Earlier, the state governments of Madhya Pradesh and Haryana, apart from Hockey India and the Lalit group of hotels, had announced a huge cash awards for the victotious team.

Sahara had recently renewed its sponsorship deal with Hockey India for a period of five years at a 170 per cent increase over the past contract period.

Cricket News : Team India Squad For Asia Cup

The big news, Sachin Tendulkar is part of the 15-member squad for Asia Cup, while out-of-form Virender Sehwag has been rested along with pacers Zaheer Khan and Umesh Yadav.

Virat Kohli, who powered India to a miraculous win last night against Sri Lanka, has been named the vice-captain in the absence of Sehwag.

The selection committee of the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) - Kris Srikkanth, Mohinder Amarnath, Narendra Hirwani, Surendra Bhave and Raja Venkat - met in Mumbai this morning to pick the squad for the tournament that begins in Dhaka, Bangladesh from March 12.

Srikkanth, chairman of selectors, clarified that no player has been dropped and the three players have rested due to injuries. Sehwag, who looked off-colour during the Australian tour, managed to score just 65 runs in 5 matches at an average of 13.

Tendulkar, who made 143 runs in seven matches Down Under, has been under tremendous pressure to take a decision on his one-day career. But the master batsman is all set to board a plane to Bangladesh. The tournament will be keenly watched as India will play old foe Pakistan, apart from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Yusuf Pathan, marked his return to competitive cricket with a 78-ball 114 to steer Baroda to a 52-run win over Saurashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, has also been picked in the squad.

The selectors have retained Ravindra Jadeja as well as Rohit Sharma. Fast bowler Ashok Dinda has also got an ODI call.

Team India squad for Asia Cup: M S Dhoni (Capt), Virat Kohli (V Capt), Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Praveen Kumar, Vinay Kumar, Rahul Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Manoj Tiwary, Irfan Pathan, Ashok Dinda.

Gk :World's shortest man is 72-year-old Chandra Bahadur Dangi of Nepal...!

CBS) It's official: The world's shortest man is Chandra Bahadur Dangi from Nepal, Guinness World Records announced Sunday.

World's shortest man is 21.5-inch-tall Nepalese 72-year-old

The 72-year-old man stands at 21.5 inches tall, a mere 5 centimeters shorter than his predecessor.

According to Guinness, Dangi hails from the Nepalese village of Reemkholi in Dang district, more than 250 miles outside of the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu. He is the seventh sibling of a family of six brothers and two sisters; three of his five brothers were less than four feet tall, while his two sisters and two brothers are of average height. Dangi spends his days making placemats and head straps for villagers, and despite his age, says he's never taken any medicine or seen a doctor.

"Just when you think it's impossible for the record to get any smaller, Mr Chandra comes along and astonishes us all by being the shortest person ever measured," Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief, Craig Glenday, said in a statement. "What I find equally remarkable is his age - if he really is 72, he is by far the oldest person to be awarded the shortest-man record in Guinness World Record's 57-year history."

The previous record-holder was 23.5-inch-tall Junrey Balawing, 18, of the Philippines, HealthPop reported. Prior to that, the record-holder was another Nepalese man, Khagendra Thapa Magar, who stood at 26.4 inches tall.

Here is Dangi accepting the award from Guinness, and spending time in his home village:

Nokia 808 PureView - Zoom and zoom again
Nokia has just come forth at MWC with a slew of announcements, one of them being the announcement of Nokia 808 PureView camera phone.

Nokia gave few details of the specs, but said that it would run a 1.3 GHz single-core processor along with 512 MB of RAM. The 808 PureView will also sport 16GB of on-board memory that is expandable using a microSD card.

The winning feature of the phone happens to be a 41-megapixel sensor that has been developed after years of research. Nokia says they managed to do so using an interpolation technique that packs 5 pixels into 1.

The availability of the 808 PureView in India is not yet known.

Google doodle :doodle on leap day and Italian composer Gioachino Rossini's 220th birthday

For a day that comes rarely to the calendar, Google has doodled a rare two-in-one doodle that commemorates not only the leap day but also the 220th birth anniversary of the Italian composer Gioachino Rossini.

Since the leap years and leap days are usually associated with frogs, the leaping ambhibians, the Google doodle on February 29 has a number of frogs, all four of them.

The doodle is inspired by Gioachino Antonio Rossini's famous 1816 comic opera The Barber of Seville (Il barbiere di Siviglia), one of the most performed operas. Of the four frogs in the scene, one is at the piano and the soprano is the only one leaping. The barber frog is Figaro and the frog getting a shave is Count Almaviva (Characters created by French playright Pierre Beaumarchais and The Barber of Seville is one of the three Figaro plays penned by him).

Google doodles frogs on leap day and Italian composer Gioachino Rossini

Gioachino Rossini

An 1870 Portrait of Gioachino Rossini by Francesco Hayez

Rossini's other famous operas include William Tell (1829), Semiramide (1823) and Cinderella (1817). Gioachino Rossini was born on February 29, 1792 (died November 13, 1868). The possibility of someone's birthday falling on February 29 is 1 in 1461 (as four years including a leap year have 1461 days in total) that in turn calculates to a mere 0.068 per cent chance.

The Gioachino Rossini leap year Google doodle is the third leap year doodle in Google's history. The previous two were put up on 2004 and 2008. There was no leap day doodle in the year 2000.

By our calculations this is the 1314th Google doodle since the first ever on for the Burning Man Festival back on August 30, 1998.

World News: US returns 200 years old treasure worth $470 mn to Spain

Tons of gold and silver from the wreck of a 19th-century Spanish warship finally arrived in Spain on Saturday, more than 200 years after a British fleet sank it.

The arrival of the cargo from the Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes sealed the end of a five-year legal battle between Spain and the US treasure hunters who hauled up the trove- worth at least 350 million euros ($470 million).

Two hulking military transport planes touched down at an airbase at Torrejon, north of Madrid, with the 23 tonnes of cargo including coins and artefacts packed in crates in their holds.

British warships sunk the Spanish frigate off the coast of Portugal near the Straits of Gibraltar during the Battle of Cape Santa Maria in October 1804.

Florida-based company Odyssey Marine Exploration discovered the wreck in May 2007 and fought in the US courts for the rights to the find, considered the most valuable sunken treasure discovery in history.

Spain was allowed to take the treasure when a judge in Florida this month denied Odyssey's claim for the Spanish government to pay the costs of storing and preserving it, in the last court case in the saga.
