Sport GK:Ashton Agar breaks 111-year record in Ashes first TEST
Ashton Agar breaks 111-year record in Ashes
Australia's Ashton Agar on Jul 12, 2013 broke a 111-year record during the second day of the first Ashes Test against England here at Trent Bridge. Scorecard The 19-year-old left-handed batsman became the first debutant in Test history to register a half century. He came agonisingly close to world record century but fell short by 2 runs. Agar was the top scorer in Australia's first innings which ended at 280 in 64.5 overs.
Agar made a 101-ball 98 with 12 fours and 2 sixes. He and Phil Hughes had a world record partnership of 163 runs for the 10th wicket. The crowd and players gave a standing ovation to Agar as he walked back to the pavilion after falling to a pull shot off Stuart Broad. It was heartbreak for the youngster having come so close to a historic hundred. However, his efforts with the bat gave Australia a 65-run first innings lead. 98 is also Agar's highest first-class score, bettering 71 not out. Before this match, he had played only 10 first-class matches. Australian Prime Minister called Agar's innings as "stunning, gutsy and agonising." He tweeted: "What a stunning, gutsy, agonising 98 from Ashton Agar in the Ashes Test."
The overall previous best by a No. 11 batsman in Tests was West Indies' Tino Best's 95 last year against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Warwick Armstrong, also of Australia was the previous highest scorer at No. 11 as a debutant with 45 not out. He had scored those runs against England in Melbourne in 1902. Agar, a specialist left-arm orthodox spinner, was handed debut by Australia on the opening day on Wednesday. He was given the Baggy Green Cap by former fast bowler Glenn McGrath.

Historical News :telegram services no more -at 9pm today (IST)
144 years after Samuel Morse sent the first telegram in Washington, the world's final telegram will be sent in India on July 14, 2013.
Telegraph services ended in the United States seven years ago, but in India, the century-and-a-half old communication medium is still widely used to send messages. The 163-year old telegram service in the country - the harbinger of good and bad news for generations of Indians - is dead.
Once the fastest means of communication for millions of people, the humble telegram was today buried without any requiem but for the promise of preserving the last telegram as a museum piece.
Nudged out by technology - SMS, emails, mobile phones - the iconic service gradually faded into oblivion with less and less people taking recourse to it.
Started in 1850 on an experimental basis between Koklata and Diamond Harbour, it was opened for use by the British East India Company the following year. In 1854, the service was made available to the public.
It was such an important mode of communication in those days that revolutionaries fighting for the country's independence used to cut the telegram lines to stop the British from communicating.
Old timers recall that receiving a telegram would be an event itself and the messages were normally opened with a sense of trepidation as people feared for the welfare of their near and dear ones.
Pockets of rural India still use the service but with the advent of technology and newer means of communication, the telegram found itself edged out.
"The service will start at 8am and close by 9pm tonight," BSNL CMD RK Upadhyay said. "The service will not be available from Monday."
State-run telecom firm BSNL had decided to discontinue telegrams following a huge shortfall in revenue. The service generated about Rs 75 lakh annually, compared with the cost of over Rs 100 crore to run and manage it.
Telecom and IT minister Kapil Sibal had said last month that "We will bid it a very warm farewell and may be the last telegram sent should be a museum piece. That's the way in which we can bid it a warm farewell."
There are about 75 telegram centres in the country, with less than 1,000 employees to manage them. BSNL will absorb these employees and deploy them to manage mobile services, landline telephony and broadband services.
Faced with declining revenue, the government had revised telegram charges in May 2011, after a gap of 60 years. Charges for inland telegram services were hiked to Rs 27 per 50 words.
Within a short time of BSNL handling telegram services in 1990s, the PSU had a rift with the Department of Posts following which telegrams were accepted as phonograms from various villages and other centres from telephone consumers.

Career News: Public bank Recruitment for 50,000 officers and clerks
Public sector banks are soon going to enter in a process to recruit over 50,000 officers and clerks in about a month or two.
A. S. Bhattacharya, Director, Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) said that they have requested banks to intimate them about the vacancies for the next financial year. There may be confirmation by August/September and the process will begin then.
"I expect the number of vacancies to be in the similar range for the forthcoming recruitment phase," the IBPS Chief said.
This will be an advantage for those who cleared the probationary officers and clerical examinations conducted by the IBPS earlier and waiting for jobs. As the validity of their qualification is up to March 2014, they stand to gain in the recruitment for the next financial year which is likely to be completed before the same deadline.
Most of the aspirants complain that the allotment of candidates to banks by IBPS in the recent past was lower than the notified vacancies in a particular bank.

Wimbledon 2013:Wimbledon champ Marion Bartoli
Marion Bartoli: From oblivion to glory
Known for her unorthodox and intense style of play, Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli was not the crowd favourite on Saturday. But her 6-1 6-4 win over Sabine Lisicki was unambiguous and masterful as she became the 2103 Wimbledon champ.
The 2013 title at the All England Club is Bartoli's first major win.
The 28-year-old is the first Frenchwoman to win a Grand Slam since Amelie Mauresmo's 2006 Wimbledon and Australian Open titles.
As seeds fell with alarming regularity through the summer tournament, it was Bartoli's lower ranked opponent Lisicki whose name trended as a giant killer. Not Bartoli so much. Not till Saturday when the 15th seed showed her mettle.
Bartoli is known for a pronounced double-fisted forehand and backhand and a high ball toss during serve.
The previous high-point in Bartoli's career was way back in 2007, when she was the runner up to Venus Williams at Wimbledon. Bartoli's run to the 2007 title clash came on the back a semi-final win over highly fancied Justine Henin.
On January 30, 2012 she reached a career-high ranking of number 7 in the world.

Firefox OS phone -- the inexpensive ZTE Open. The launch is a
significant milestone in Mozilla's attempt to crack the Apple and
Google mobile strongholds.
It's not every day that a new mobile operating system arrives, but
Tuesday will be one of them as Telefonica begins selling the
inexpensive ZTE Open with Mozilla's Firefox OS in Spain.
The move marks the commercial beginning of an effort by phone makers
and network operators to use Mozilla's open-source, browser-based
operating system to reclaim power in the mobile market lost to Apple
and Google.
The phone itself costs 69 euros ($90), including 30 euros ($39) of
pay-as-you-go credit -- or for those who sign up for a two-year
contract, for 2.38 euros ($3.10) per month. That's a lot cheaper than
most of the new Android and iOS smartphones on the market today that
consumers have flocked to and that Firefox OS is competing with.
The ZTE Open won't impress smartphone power users who want more than
its 3.5-inch 480x320-pixel touchscreen, 3.2MP camera, 256MB RAM, and
512MB flash memory that's boosted with an included 4GB microSD card.
But it's not designed to win them over; it's more for new and
cost-conscious smartphone buyers, Yotam Benami, Telefonica's digital
director of open Web devices, said in an interview.
