PM Narendra Modi launches new website 'MyGov' for citizens
Within 60 days of assuming office, Honorable Prime Minister of India has launched a website MyGov, a platform that empowers the citizens of India to contribute towards good governance. The website targets to help citizens partcipate in governance by giving their opinions and views on important issues like clean Ganga or skill development.
Mr. Modi said, "In past 60 days I've experienced that there are many people who want to contribute towards nation-building, and devote their time and energy. MyGov platform is a technology-driven medium that would provide this opportunity to all the well wishers of India spread across the globe to contribute towards good governance."
"The platform would bridge gap gulf between people and government. Democracy cannot succeed without people's participation in government and this participation should not be limited only during elections," the Prime Minister said.
The platform will be implemented and managed by National Informatics Centre (NIC) of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY).
The technology based platform is structured to welcome advices and guidances from the people of India. The website has also made arrangements for discussion forums where people can share their thoughts and ideas pertaining to issues of national interest.
Mr. Modi on the launching event of the technology-run interactive platform, said that the government also wishes to get advices for the improvement of the web portal. The website allows constructive feedback and interaction.
Besides the prime minister, communications and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, cabinet secretary Ajit Seth, DEITY secretary R S Sharma were also there at the launch of the portal.
"It is also an initiative to build a digital knowledge library. We will guide the people on the topics of national importance on which the government would like to know their views and ideas," said Sharma after the launch.
The web portal presents the stage to have interactive sessions with the government on a large scale. Now, it would be interesting to see how the government as well as the public responds to the new arena of interaction. Right now, there are six groups on the platform — Clean Ganga, Girl Child Education, Clean India, Skilled India, Digital India and Job Creation.
Google's "Little Box Challenge" -Apply for the Little Box Challenge and create a renewable energy inverter
Tech giant, Google is offering a prize of USD one million (about Rs 6 crore) for building a compact solution for transforming renewable energy into a power source that can be used at home. Google, along with Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), has started a 'Little Box Challenge' to design and build a kW-scale power inverter, a device used to convert renewable energy, including solar and wind, before transforming it into suitable current for home and vehicles.
The challenge is that the new device has to be of the size of a small laptop, roughly 1/10th of the current size. "We are looking for someone to build a kW-scale inverter with a power density greater than 50W per cubic inch. Do it best and we will give you a million bucks," Google said in a blogpost.
Google believes that this will help "change the future of electricity". "We believe that inverters will become increasingly important to our economy and environment as solar PV, batteries, and similar power sources continue their rapid growth," Google said.
It added that the innovation coming in would have wide applicability across areas, will increase efficiency, drive down costs and open up new use cases. Google said making the power inverter smaller would enable more solar-powered homes, more efficiently distributed electrical grids, and could help bring electricity to the most remote parts of the planet.
"A smaller inverter could help create low-cost micro grids in remote parts of the world. Or allow you to keep the lights on during a blackout via your electric car's battery. Or enable advances we haven't even thought of yet," Eric Raymond from Google's Green Team wrote. The last date for registration is September 30, 2014, while the grand prize winner will be announced in January 2016.

New Online Payment Service for Quicker Checkout Launched by Visa
Payment processor Visa is launching a new service called Visa Checkout that eliminates a few steps in online payment.
Visa Checkout
joins similar services like eBay's PayPal, MasterCard's MasterPass,
Amazon's one-click checkout and others. It's not Visa's first effort. In
2012, Visa launched a similar V.me service, which Visa Checkout is
replacing.
The
company and its retailing partners, including Neiman Marcus, Pizza Hut,
Staples and others, hope a quicker payout will lead to fewer abandoned
shopping carts online. As more customers shop on smaller screens like
smartphones and tablets, the hassle of entering in credit card numbers
and billing addresses is becoming a sticking point and payment
processors have been working to find ways to simplify the process.
Users can sign up with Visa credit and debit cards, as well
as other branded cards, and enter their card information just once. Then
they will be able pay for things via Visa by only entering their
username and password at participating sites. The service is currently
being offered in the U.S., Canada and Australia

Test of equivalence principle searches for effects of spin-gravity coupling
Einstein's equivalence principle states that an object in gravitational free fall is physically equivalent to an object that is accelerating with the same amount of force in the absence of gravity. This principle lies at the heart of general relativity and has been experimentally tested many times. Now in a new paper, scientists have experimentally demonstrated a conceptually new way to test the equivalence principle that could detect the effects of a relatively new concept called spin-gravity coupling.
The study, by M. G. Tarallo, et al., is published in a recent issue of Physical Review Letters.
"Testing the equivalence principle, or the equivalence of inertial mass and gravitational mass, means testing the validity of one of the fundamental principles of general relativity," coauthor Guglielmo Tino, Professor at the University of Florence, INFN, told Phys.org. "In our experiment, we use a quantum sensor to investigate gravitational interaction; this allowed us to search for new effects."
As the researchers explain, there are a variety of ways to test the equivalence principle. These methods include studying the motion of moons and planets, the use of torsion balances, and—more recently—atom interferometry.
In the new study, the researchers have for the first time tested the equivalence principle by comparing the gravitational interaction for a bosonic particle to that of a fermionic particle. For the purpose of the experiment, the important difference between the two particles is that the bosonic particle (a strontium-88 isotope) has no spin, while the fermionic particle (a strontium-87 isotope) has a half-integer spin.
In order to determine how the differences in spin might affect a particle's gravitational interaction, the researchers performed tests to measure each isotope's acceleration due to gravity. These tests consist of confining atomic wave packets in a vertical laser standing wave, and then using a quantum effect involving delocalization to measure the effects of gravity. The new method improves the measurement precision by more than an order of magnitude over previous methods.
The results of the experiments enabled the researchers to set an upper limit of 10-7 on the boson-to-fermion gravitational constant ratio. The researchers also searched for a dependence of gravity acceleration of strontium-87 isotope on the spin direction, but found no evidence for it.
"There are theoretical models predicting that spin and gravity should couple; that is, depending on its spin a particle should behave in different ways in a gravitational field," Tino said. "We found no evidence for that. Since we compared an atom with spin with one without spin, this is a rather stringent test. Also, in our experiment one atom is a boson and the other is a fermion and, again, we found no difference in their behavior in a gravitational field."
The results could have future applications in connection with optical clocks made of strontium, which have already demonstrated impressive stability and accuracy. In the future, it may also be possible to perform an experiment in space using a strontium optical clock and a strontium interferometer to perform stringent tests of general relativity and gravity.
"Our result reported in this paper, as well as the one we recently published on the measurement of the gravitational constant with atoms (G. Rosi, et al.), shows the great potential of quantum sensors based on ultracold atoms and atom interferometry to investigate gravity," Tino said. "We want to try new schemes to increase the sensitivity of the atom interferometer; this would allow us to perform still more stringent tests and search for new effects."
