Celebrating Srinivasa Ramanujan's 125th birthday, Google posted a doodle on its homepage. The doodle features a boy trying to solve some mathematical equations and geometrical figures, which form the letters of the word 'Google'. But who was Srinivasa Ramanujan?
Born on 22 December 1887, Srinivasa Ramanujan was an Indian mathematician who made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. He was an autodidact. Living in India with no access to the larger mathematical community, Srinivasa Ramanujan came up with his own mathematical research in isolation.
Ramanujan was born in a poor Hindu Brahmin family. His introduction to formal mathematics began at age 10. He demonstrated a natural ability. By the age of 12, he mastered books on advanced trigonometry written by S. L. Loney. Ramanujan discovered theorems of his own.
On 14 July 1909, Ramanujan got married to Janaki Ammal, a ten-year old bride.
In 1912-1913, he sent out samples of his theorems to three academics at the University of Cambridge. His brilliance was recgonised and he was invited to visit and work at Cambridge. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.
On 26 April 1920, Ramanujan died of illness, malnutrition, and possibly liver infection at the age of 32.
In December 2011, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared 2012 as the 'National Mathematical year' as a tribute to maths wizard Srinivasa Ramanujan. Singh also declared December 22, the birthday of Ramanujan, as 'National Mathematics Day.'
"A genius like Ramanujan would shine bright even in the most adverse of circumstances, but we should be geared to encourage and nurture good talent which may not be of the same calibre as that of Ramanujan", Singh had once said.
It is believed that a biography of Ramanujan named "The Man Who Knew Infinity: A Life of the Genius Ramanujan," written by Professor Robert Kanigel has made Ramanujan well known to the public at large all over the world.
Along with CV Raman and Subramanyam Chandrashekhar (both Nobel laureates), Srinivasa Ramanujan is said to be among the three great men of science and mathematics that Tamil Nadu and India have given to the world of modern times.
Sharing his thoughts on Srinivasa Ramanujan, the great mathematician, after whom the year was named as the National Year of Mathematics, Dr Kalam said, "Ramanujan lived for 33 years only. But he was an exceptional mathematician."

After becoming the most-watched video ever on YouTube, Korean singer Psy's pop sensation "Gangnam Style" has now booked a place in popular culture with recognition from a renowned British dictionary.
"Gangnam Style" has been named among the Collins dictionary's words of the year along with "mummy porn", "fiscal cliff" and "Romneyshambles". Psy's song was the dictionary's word for November - when his horse dance video became YouTube's most popular clip, 'Mirror News' reported.
"Mummy porn" became April's word of the year as the erotic novel 'Fifty Shades of Grey' was published during that month and became an instant bestseller. Defeated presidential candidate Mitt Romney made in it July after critics branded his visit to London a "Romneyshambles".
"Jubilympics" was June's word, while "Games Makers" was August's due to the volunteers who made the Olympic event in UK a success. Each word was submitted by the public to the on-line dictionary at www.collinsdictionary.com/submission.
However, the publishers said not all 12 words had the staying power to make it to the print edition. "We are astounded by how quickly new trends form. Choosing one word for 2012 didn't match the pace of change," Ian Brookes, consulting editor at Collins, said.
"Choosing just one word for 2012 didn't match the pace at which our language is changing, so we selected one popular word to represent each month from the whole range of those submitted," he said.
Words that made it the dictionary this year are 'Broga' for January, 'Legbomb' in February, 'Eurogeddon' (March), 'Mummy Porn' (April), 'Zuckered' for May. 'Jubilympics' was word of the year for June, 'Romneyshambles' for July, 'Games Makers' for August, '47 per cent' in September, 'Superstorm' (October), 'Gangnam Style' for November and 'Fiscal cliff' for December.
On Friday, the BCCI announced the full schedule of the 2013 season which will run from April 3 to May 26 across 11 venues in India. Kolkata Knight Riders, the current IPL champions, and Delhi Daredevils will play each other on the opening of the sixth season of the IPL on April 3 at Eden Gardens.

Victory in all four games for India, currently ranked third on the T20I table with 120 ratings points, will not only propel them to number one position with a gain of 12 rating points but will also open up a five-point lead over current table toppers, Sri Lanka. This will be the first time that India have a chance of making it to the No.1 spot in the T20I championship table since it was launched in October 2011.
But if India lose even one of the four matches, the best they can hope to end 2012 is at the number two place, while losing all four could mean slipping down to as low as seventh position with 106 ratings points. England and Pakistan could hope to push up a place if they win their games against India.
Meanwhile, South Africa could rise up to number two spot if they win the series against the New Zealand 3-0. But the final positioning for South Africa will be determined by the outcome of India's series against England and Pakistan. When you try to update your system with update-manager or synaptic or apt-get or ... you receive the error message

E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
(The filename /var/lib/apt/lists/... might be different)
This is caused by a problem in the local storage of the package directory.
There is a command that clears up all locally stored lists (which is part of the https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure)
Open a terminal (ctrl-alt-t) end execute these three commands:
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists
sudo mkdir /var/lib/apt/lists
sudo mkdir /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
In most cases executing these commands solves the problem, and updating the system works again.

Google has added a new feature to Drive: You can now serve up web content from within your Google Drive folder, even ones that run JavaScript. All you need to do is upload your HTML files and assets (e.g., images) and make them public.
The Google Developers site has more details on publishing a folder as a website, but essentially, besides having the folder and site assets public, you also need to link to the files in the folder using a "webViewLink" code. If you don't have an index.html file in the folder, Drive will display a list of the folder's contents.

Veteran actor Kamal Haasan who has been busy working on his current project 'Vishwaroopam' is soon to make his flick in Hollywood, after receiving praise and an invitation from prominent producer Barry M Osborne.
Rumour suggests that he will be launching Mani Ratnam's son, Nandhan with the project on board.
Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan share a friendship ever since their days from 'Nayagan' and are known to be great representatives of Tamil cinema in the outside world.
However, this is quite a surprise considering Nandhan hasn't appeared in any movie yet. Although his character hasn't been confirmed, it appears that Nandhan will indeed make his debut with Hassan's first.
Having grown up with an experienced film-maker like his father, we might just see another south mega star coming up soon.
It is a fact not known to everyone that Akshay Kumar is a man of wit and humour even when he is not kicking butt on the big screen and this quality of his was evident in the way he effortlessly handled the questions shot at him during a press interaction for his latest film 'Khiladi 786' in the satellite town Gurgaon.
The Khiladi Kumar, who came with his co-actor Asin Thottumkal in tow, was questioned for landing more than an hour late for the press meet by one of the media persons present in the room. The quick-witted Akki said, "I was told to come at this time. So darling, please don't ask me this question. I am very punctual. And I feel very proud to say that."
As compared to Akshay's other 'Khiladi' movies, 'Khiladi 786' is replete with even more deadly and gravity-defying stunts. And one of them required the actor to jump from a height of 45 feet. So, when quizzed on why he decided to perform the sequence, the stunt-loving actor's answer was simple and clear: "First of all, no one should attempt to do that. But I do it because I practice it, enjoy it and at the same time I train for it. I do it for my passion for stunt scenes. There are people on the sets to take care of me and there is an ambulance too."
Akshay's 'Khiladi' films have borne fruits for him in past and with 'Khiladi 786' the actor has kept his hopes high that this time too the audience give thumbs up to the action-comedy.
With hot shot actors reigning Bollywood, Akshay was asked for his opinion on who else he thinks is best suited to be called a Khiladi, to which he coolly replied, "The industry is filled with Khiladis. So there is nothing such that there is only one Khiladi in Bollywood. Any one can be a Khiladi."
'Khiladi 786' is a catchy title and an intriguing one too given the fact that the numbers 786 are considered sacred in the Islamic faith. So it was obvious that this question will be put forward before Akki.
And here's what he answered, "786 mean bismillah, to begin something in the name of God. In the movie's story the protagonist palm lines resemble the number 786 which means that he is blessed with God's grace and no one can harm him. But the interesting part of the story is what if something bad happens to the hero. So the movie explores that possibility as well. That's why it was important to name this film as 'Khiladi 786'."
With the film's co-producer and actor Himesh Reshmmiya making statement that only Akshay is the real hero in the film while the rest are extras did raise a lot of eyebrows but Akshay chose to take a more mature and diplomatic approach while commenting on Himesh's controversial statement. "I would not call them (the other actors) as extras. Others are very much important as much I am important. May be I am important than them a little bit more but they are also a very important part of the team. For example, without Himesh I would not have got so many good songs. Even Himesh has played a crucial role in the film.
Actress Asin Thottumkal, who plays Akshay's love interest and a Marathi girl in the movie, could not stop herself from singing praises in the name of the former. "Akshay is a positive person and he encourages me to work in a better way. As an actor he is very disciplined and punctual. It is a myth that disciplined people are snobbish. Akshay is fun loving.
So what is so extraordinary about 'Khiladi 786' that will pull the crowd to the theatres? "It is a fun film and it is a complete family entertainer that you can watch with your entire family. The film won't disappoint you. You will come out of the theatre with a smile on your face after watching the film. Even the movie's songs composed by Himesh Reshmmiya's have done well. The audience will love the film's over-the-top action scenes besides many other good things," explained Akshay.
'Khiladi 786' opens in theatres on December 7, 2012.
