India and China on 17 January 2012 agreed to establish a working mechanism on consultation and coordination on border affairs between the two countries. A pact to this effect was signed at the end of the two-day meeting of the Special Representatives of the two countries in New Delhi.
The working mechanism will be headed by a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs and a Director General level officer of China. The decision to set up the mechanism was taken at a meeting between the Prime Ministers of the two countries in April 2011.
The mechanism will study ways and means to conduct and strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the military personnel and establishments of the two sides in the border areas and will undertake other tasks that are mutually agreed upon. It was decided that the officials of the two sides will hold consultations once or twice a year.
This was the 15th round of boundary talks between the Special Representatives of the two countries and the next round of talks will be held in China.
